While year 2011 began with rising fuel prices, higher interest rates and a drop in auto sales, the same cannot be said about how it has ended. While auto manufacturers were worried a lot at the start of the year, their fears were unfound by the time the year ended. December 2011 sales have shown an upward trend for two and four wheeler companies in India.
Bajaj Auto sales increased by 10% while taking only motorcycles into account the company received an 8% increase in sales. Year end discounts and sops offered by companies to better their annual sales seem to be the cause for this spurt in buying. Passenger sales increased during the month of December. Hero MotoCorp too recorded sales increase by 7.8% however, the same cannot be said for TVS Motors who saw a drop in sales by 0.2% while that of motorcycles fell by 7.7% though scooter sales increased by 7%.
Where four wheelers were concerned, Tata Motors offered year end discounts and hence domestic passenger sales increased by 24% while that of commercial vehicles increased by 14%. Maruti Suzuki cannot be taken into competition considering the trying times they have faced with strikes and plant shutdowns. They saw a decline in sales by 7%.
With such difficulties faced during 2011, auto manufacturers and two wheeler companies are hopeful that 2012 will actually be a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
