2014 Tata Nano with power steering launch on 16th Jan?

Declining sales of their iconic world-renowned car, Nano, has been a worry for Tata Motors. Even after launching Nano facelift and a CNG offering earlier this year, there seems to be no change as far as sales charts are concerned.

But, Tata has not given up on the product, even when sales during the Jan-Nov 2013 period have been below the 20,000 mark, their monthly production capacity. To revive sales, they have confirmed that they are going to launch newer, improved variants of Nano soon. As part of this plan, Tata Motors is soon going to offer a Nano with power-steering. Though Tata is yet to reveal officially, IAB reports the launch date is 16th January 2014. This new Nano variant will come at a premium of about Rs 15-20,000. The power steering system is developed by German Public Company, ZF Friedrichshafen.

This is the same company which gave the world it’s first 9 speed auto transmission, Land Rover demonstrated the same at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. Apart from this, Jeep too announced that their Cherokee will come with 9 speed AT, developed by ZF Friedrichshafen. In 2013, ZF also opened a car transmission plant in the US.

The power steering unit which is developed for Tata Nano is an electric one. The new Nano power-steering variant will be named Nano Twist. The launch of Nano Twist will come as a big relief to Nano fans, as unavailability of power steering had made many to opt for other cars like Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon. Apart from Nano with power steering, Tata is also working on diesel Nano, which will feature a indigineously manufactured 800 cc engine. The debut of diesel Nano is expected to take place at 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. (source)
