2014 World Car of the Year Audi A3 India launch nears, #NextBigAudi

A conference hosted by New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) and Bridgestone Corporation revealed Audi A3 as 2014 World Car of the Year. Previously Audi has won 7 times. These include 2005 World Car of the Year title, 3 World Performance Car titles in 2010, 2008 and 2007, and 2 World Car Design of the Year titles in 2008 and 2007. Audi A3 premium compact sedan triumphed an initial entry list of 24 global cars, a shortlist of 12 and 3 finalists. This year’s finalists were BMW 4 Series, Mazda 3 and Audi A3.

Audi A3Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, said, “The Audi A6 was the first ever winner of this award and we are delighted that the Audi A3 has repeated that achievement by being voted 2014 World Car of the Year. The Audi A3 showcases Audi’s technical competence in all aspects of carmaking, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment and driver assistance systems. This major award win is an achievement that the whole company can celebrate.”

The World Car Awards jurors observed that, “It might borrow styling hints from its bigger brothers, but the A3 still offers classic, chiseled contours and even better interior trim levels. With a superb choice of engines and 4 body styles, the A3 range packs a hefty premium punch in the small luxury segment. Audi should be complimented for making this A3 ride like no other A3. All the old shimmer over rough surfaces has gone, replaced by a silky smooth ride that approaches limousine quality.”

To be eligible cars must be on sale on at least 2 continents between January 1, 2013 ending May 31, 2014. An international jury panel of 69 automotive journalists from 22 countries globally select and vote for a winner. A juror is appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Previous winners are Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Up! in 2012, Nissan Leaf in 2011, Volkswagen Polo in 2010, Volkswagen Golf in 2009, Mazda2 / Mazda Demio in 2008, Lexus LS460 in 2007, BMW 3-Series in 2006, and Audi A6 in 2005.

Audi A3 was earlier this year showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. This apart, the compact sedan has been spotted on test runs often these past few months. Audi A3 India launch is expected in mid 2014, and is creating a social media buzz with #NextBigAudi
