As part of its aggressive strategy for the Indian market, Porsche will be launching its first electric car Taycan in India later this year.

It may be recalled that Porsche Taycan was first unveiled at 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. Taycan will be launched in India by Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. as part of the organization’s India 2.0 strategy. One of the most powerful car in Porsche range, Taycan will be launched in India in two variants – Turbo and Turbo S.

Porsche Taycan has everything that a luxury car lover would desire. Everything from its sleek, aerodynamic bodywork to sporty interiors, advanced technology integrations and high performance electric motor, there’s something delightful in everything you see, touch and experience.

Powering Porsche Taycan is a massive 93.4kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack. The battery supplies power to twin motors, mounted on each axle, which generate combined power output of 616 hp. Using ‘Overboost Power’ option, users can increase power output to 680 hp in Turbo variant and 761 hp in Turbo S variant. This allows driver to achieve astonishingly high acceleration, 0-100 kmph in 3.2 seconds for Turbo and just 2.8 seconds for Turbo S. Taycan also has the lowest drag coefficient and centre of gravity among Porsche cars, which also helps achieve super-fast acceleration.

Range anxiety is not a problem with Taycan, as it has a certified range of 450 km. Charging Taycan is also a fast and hassle-free affair. Powered by 800 volts, Taycan can be charged from 5 to 80 percent in just around 22.5 minutes.

Porsche Taycan appears desirable for every car lover, but it remains to be seen whether it can achieve targeted sales numbers. With high import duties, Porsche Taycan will cost around 2.5 times more in India, as compared to its price in US. Current estimates provide a figure of $370,000, which is approximately Rs 2.6 crore. Outside of India, Porsche Taycan is available in the range of $100,000 (Rs 70 Lakh) to $150,900 (Rs 1.06 Cr).

However, Porsche seems confident of Taycan’s success in India, as it feels that the super-rich in the country like to experiment and don’t mind paying extra for a truly world class product. Porsche’s first electric car would appeal to people who want the sports car experience without causing any harm to the environment.

Taycan’s launch in India is certainly a courageous decision, as other carmakers such as Tesla have stayed away citing high import duties. Porsche Taycan will be manufactured at a new facility in Zuffenhausen, Germany and imported in India via the CBU route.
