In a bid to make sure vehicles conform to environmental norms and regulations, passenger cars in India will have to display a five star rating in relation to their fuel economy. Though this initiative has been received with much enthusiasm by customers and environmentalists, the automobile sector isn’t too thrilled about this decision.

The Indian government has proposed a fuel rating of 128 gm/km for all vehicles from 2015. In due course leading up to this the government hopes to reduce the emission rating by 2% each year. The automobile sector isn’t happy with the decision as it feels that time constraints are a major concern for fruitful implementation of this decision. Another major concern with fuel ratings is process by which these ratings will be provided for vehicles having the same fuel ratings but from different segments.

Forcefully implementing these results will not solve this problem and authorities, BEE and SIAM need to resolve this deadlock for better regulations without compromising on security and safety aspects of a vehicle.
