BMW Brazil plant groundbreaking ceremony

BMW Group conducted the ground breaking ceremony on their upcoming plant in Araquari, Santa Catarina, Brazil. This new plant which will comprise of a body shop, paint shop and assembly facility will be completed by early 2014, after which production operations will commence.

This new plant will also entail the addition of 1300 new workers in direct jobs while employment opportunities will also be added in the form of ancillary workers. This Brazilian plant will be BMW’s first ever automotive plant in South America from where the company expects to assemble a total of 30,000 vehicles annually.

Once commissioned, the company plans to assemble MINI Countryman, BMW 1 Series 5 door, 3 Series Sedan, X1 and X3 models. The new plant will take BMW Group’s global manufacturing network to 29 production and assembly sites spread across 13 countries on four continents.

The plant in Brazil is slated to make extensive contribution to the company’s profitability and global growth. The company has proved that ‘production follows the market’ strategy as is seen in markets of US and China and it is hoped that Brazil follows suit.
