BMW had showcased the i8 hybrid sportscar in its production format at 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. That was when it made its global debut. Ever since that time, India has been awaiting its turn. Last year, at the Delhi Auto Expo, BMW India did show us the i8, but launch was no where in sight. Finally, BMW i8 launch for India has been announced and it will happen on 18th February 2015.

BMW i8 is powered by a petrol engine and electric motor working singularly or in tandem. The 1.5 liter three cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is capable of 228 bhp peak power while its electric motor will offer 129 bhp power thus resulting in combined output of 357 bhp and 570 Nm torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph is achieved in 4.4 seconds while top speed is at 250 kmph. The electric motor which sends power to front wheels is mated to a 2 speed gearbox while the petrol engine which sends power to rear wheels is mated to a 6 speed gearbox.
With launch date around the corner, two units of BMW i8 have already been imported into the country at the BMW Chennai facility and bookings are expected to be initiated soon. Built of carbon fiber, the BMW i8 weighs a total of 1,490 kgs and sports a low slung, coupe like stance. The 2+2 seater receives a state of the art dashboard and laser headlamps. It will also feature a flat twin kidney grille while on either sides oblong shaped full LED headlights will be evident. Wide air intakes and aerodynamically enhanced wings add to the BMW i8 sporty appearance along with scissor doors that open upwards and flared wheel arches with specially designed alloy wheels.
BMW i8 comes into India in limited numbers with pricing at a premium and estimated to be close to INR 2 crores. National launch will take place in Mumbai, and BMW India’s brand ambassador, Sachin Tendulkar will grace the occassion.
