BMW India increases sourcing from domestic suppliers

BMW India suppliers now include Force Motors, ZF Hero Chassis, Draexlmaier India, Tenneco Automotive India, Valeo India, Mahle Behr and Lear India. Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India says the Chennai plant is the heart of operations here. BMW Group has continually strengthened its commitment to the Indian market, and over time, has increased the number of locally produced car models.

BMW India has a strong portfolio of locally produced cars. Partnering with major Indian auto component suppliers plays a noteworthy role in BMW India’s future strategy. With increased local partnerships, localisation level at the BMW plant Chennai will increase to about 50 pct.

Robert Frittrang, Managing Director, BMW Plant Chennai says cars produced here have the same international quality standards as any of the 30 BMW Group production and assembly facilities worldwide. Skilled employees, advanced manufacturing processes, modern machinery and tech in use ensures global standards. Partnership with Indian auto component suppliers will help set higher benchmarks in quality standard, cost optimisation, and value addition.

Major auto components sourced for BMW India local production are: Engine and gearbox from Force Motors; axles from ZF Hero Chassis; door panels and wiring harness from Draexlmaier India; exhaust systems from Tenneco Automotive India; heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and cooling modules from Valeo India and Mahle Behr, and seats from Lear India.

BMW India activities include a Chennai manufacturing plant, Mumbai parts warehouse, and development of a dealer organisation across major metropolitan centres. Thus far Rs 3.9 billion (51.8 Million Euro) has been invested in the Chennai BMW plant. BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, 3 Series Gran Turismo, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3 and X5 are locally produced on two assembly lines. BMW is the third largest luxury manufacturer in India by sales volume.
