BMW India revealed that they have sold 280 MINI cars in India, since the iconic brand was launched in the country earlier this year in April. BMW now aims to sell 300 MINI cars by the end of this year. On the other hand, MINI’s rival, Beetle sales have declined for 2012. As anticipated, the launch of MINI has affected VW Beetle sales, but seeing such drastic decline, is surprising.
As for Jan-Nov 2012 period the Volkswagen sold just 1 Beetle, compared to 125 units of Beetle sold in 2011. The sole 2012 Beetle for India, was sold this in April. Volkswagen Beetle was launched in India back in 2009 and is sold in India at an ex-showroom price of over 21 lakhs.
BMW Group on the other hand, launched Mini in the premium segment in India in January 2012 and it is available as completely built units through exclusive dealer networks. Based on demand and performance of Mini, the BMW announced that they will be expanding their dealer networks by end of 2014 and will be launching more models of Mini.
Previewing the current economic situation and with aspirations for a better situation in 2013, BMW Group stated that there are only three models of Mini currently available in India – Mini Cooper, Cooper S and Countryman.
These models are in a price band of Rs.25 lakhs to Rs.35 lakhs and are available in six speed automatic transmission with powerful and efficient petrol variants. Three more models will be launched soon while their current dealer network will also be enhanced to 8 dealers by 2014. BMW Group’s Mini production facility in India is not being planned as on date and Mini is brought in as a 100 percent imported vehicle till the company is confident of its performance in the country.
