Today was a special day for the German car manufacturer, BMW. They not only achieved the milestone of manufacturing 10,000th unit at the Chennai facility, they also revealed their plans of expansion in India. The Chennai facility was setup in March 2007, and according to BMW India's official statement, "Till September 2010, BMW Group has invested Rs 1.1 billion. BMW Group's investment in India will be increased to Rs 1.8 billion by the end of 2012."
Mr Andreas Schaaf, President, BMW India, said, "Having taken the lead in the premium segment for the first time last year (which they might lose this year to another German manufacturer and 2008 winner, Mercedes-Benz), we aim to maintain our leading position in the Indian market by now embarking on the second wave of our India strategy."
The Chennai facility has state of the art equipments and employs 400 people who work in a single shift to manufacture 5,400 units annually. BMW India also has a warehouse in Mumbai where they store accessories and spare parts of their cars.
