Carvana air delivery for cars through CarCopters in future

Carvana auto retailer offers easy and transparent online car buying with next day delivery. Now they’ve announced the use of transport helicopters to expand delivery and pick-up options. They have also introduced the USA’s 1st vehicle vending machine.

Carvana Air service delivers vehicles in less than 29 minutes after purchase and covers an 11-mile radius from its vending machine locations. This approach is similar to Amazon’s drone delivery concepts.

The future CarCopters fleet will be housed at its vending machine facilities across US and will be used for deliveries 24/7. Carvana’s delivery team is currently enrolled in flight school and will be fully certified in time for the rollout expected by 2022, pending FAA approval. Carvana is discussing deliveries via submarine, hot air balloon and mesospheric options in collaboration with SpaceX.

“We got a little tired of Amazon droning on and on about their drones,” stated Ernie Garcia, President and founder of Carvana. “The great thing about delivering cars with helicopters is that helicopters are awesome…plus there is still room for a package weighing up to 6 pounds (besting Amazon by 1 pound) inside the car”.

“We have always challenged ourselves to offer the most innovative solution for consumers to purchase vehicles. Carvana Air is another example of us pushing the envelope and providing a service to customers that is unmatched anywhere else,” states Ernie Garcia. “While we have heard other online retailers discussing similar plans for real-time air deliveries using drones, they have a very narrow weight limit, close to five pounds. Our CarCopters will allow us to deliver vehicles of all sizes and weights to customers in less than 30 minutes. As part of our R&D process we thought about using drones, but decided against it in favor of helicopters. Why? Because drones are scary. Have you ever seen Terminator?”
