2020 BMW 1 Series

Third generation BMW 1 Series has just been revealed and it appears to have undergone a complete makeover. One of the key changes is the shift from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive. Rear wheel drive was among the most distinctive features of BMW 1 Series, but that will change with the new generation hatchback. A number of cosmetic and mechanical changes have also been incorporated in 2020 BMW 1 Series.

BMW’s signature kidney grille and LED DRLs are intact, but the hatchback gets a new pair of headlamps. Front bumper is now sharper and comes with contrasting inserts, flanked by a large air dam. 2020 BMW 1 Series has sharp character lines on the sides and distinctive rear profile with edgy tail lamps and bumper design.

Interiors have also been redesigned in line with the aesthetics of bigger cars manufactured by BMW. The hatchback comes with fully digital instrument console and has a large 10.25-inch infotainment system. Other key features include wireless charging, BMW digital key, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and personal assistant. With its front-wheel drive configuration, third-generation BMW 1 Series now has more legroom and shoulder space for rear passengers. Boot space is also bigger at 380 litres, an improvement of around 20 litres.

Next-gen BMW 1 Series will be available in four trims – Adventure Line, Luxury Line, Sport Line and M Sport. Engine choices will include two petrol and three diesel options. Another key change is the type of engine, wherein the earlier inline-six motor will be replaced with either 3-cylinder or 4-cylinder units. These have power output rating in the range of 114 PS to 306 PS.

Most powerful engine is the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol unit that generates 306 PS power and 450 Nm torque. Engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It can reach 0-100 in just around 4.8 seconds and comes with a top speed of 250 kmph. Most powerful diesel engine is the 120d xDrive, which generates 188 PS / 400 Nm. Engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and power is sent to all four wheels.

Global launch of BMW 1 Series is scheduled for September, but before that, the hatchback will be showcased in June at #NextGen event in Munich, Germany. As earlier generation 1 Series was discontinued in India due to diminishing sales, it is unlikely that next-gen BMW 1 Series will be launched here.
