Delhi Metro amongst the best public transport system in the world: Dr Kalam
Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, one of the most loved former President of India, took his maiden journey aboard the Delhi Metro earlier this week.
Eloquent about functioning of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Kalam wrote in the visitorâ€™s book where he praised Metroâ€™s environmentally friendly and user friendly attributes. He also called this transportation system as amongst the best in the world and noted its qualities of cost effectiveness, cleanliness, safety and punctuality.
It may be brought to mind that Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (or DMRC), which began offering services on 3rd Oct 2010, has been accredited by United Nations as being first Metro rail and rail system to get carbon credits for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The Metro system reduces pollution levels in the city by 630,000 tonnes per year.
These Metro trains are lightweight and made of stainless steel they are fitted with pneumatic springs, regenerative brakes and are airy and spacious with wide vestibules and automatic doors. These are assembled by Bangalore based Bharat Earth Movers Limited who will also be supplying coaches for the Phase III. The Metro system covers total network of 190 kms and has maintained 99.7% punctuality rate over the past year.

â€śDelhi Metro Rail Corporation has brought the most advanced rail technologies for the first time, to India. The notable gains to the country are, light weight stainless steel, sleek, modern trains with pneumatic springs, regenerative braking, public information display, wide vestibules and automatic doors. The sophisticated coach technology, which was not available in the country so far, has now been transferred to M/s Bharat Earth Movers Ltd., Bangalore, which is now assembling these trains with progressive indigenization. BEML is now in a position to supply coaches needed for Phase-III of Delhi Metro Rail and meet the requirement for Metro Rail projects coming up in other cities of the country.â€ť
