New Hyundai i20 explained on video by Head of Product Marketing

2020 Hyundai i20 will reach India in the near future but with different powertrain choices compared to its global model

Hyundai had planned to launch the next-generation i20 at Geneva Motor Show 2020 which was cancelled due to Corona Virus outbreak. This delay will affect its launch across all key markets, including India. As per initial speculations, Hyundai India would have launched new i20 sometime around mid-2020. However, considering the current lockdown and overall status quo, this might get pushed by at least a few weeks.

While the official launch seems a little far away, Hyundai Europe has released a new video which gives detailed information about the fourth-gen i20. Raf Van Nuffel, Head of Product Marketing & Pricing for Hyundai Motor Europe has done a detailed walkaround of new Hyundai i20. The car you see is a Euro-spec model and we don’t think that there will be considerable changes in the India-bound version (except for engine choices).

Hyundai has used its latest format of Sensuous Sportiness design philosophy. Sharp lines add to its aggressive stance. Hyundai has brought in a new grille and a more sculpted bonnet while headlamps (with integrated DRLs) look sharper. Large triangular fog lamp housings further accentuate the sportiness.

On either side, a wedge-style design runs through both the doors and converges at the C-Pillar. Alloy wheels look a bit edgy and have a relatively unconventional design. Like its predecessor, 2020 Hyundai i20 also draws considerable attention to its C Pillar. This time, Hyundai has added chrome elements apart from glossy blacked-out bits.

Its rear profile has had a full-fledged makeover as well. It gets new tail lamps connected via a tastefully designed light bar. Hyundai has paid attention to details and one can observe that “i20” is embossed inside the tail lamp cluster.

Video also shows the hatchback’s interiors, with a cabin design in sync with the sketches we had seen a few weeks ago. There are wide AC vents and horizontal lines running across the dashboard. There are two 10.25-inch digital screens: one as a dedicated Driver Information Display Unit and one as a part of the touchscreen infotainment system. Like all modern-day Hyundai cars, 2020 i20 gets the BlueLink connectivity suite. Other notable features include a sunroof, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay connectivity, ESP, 6 airbags, ISOFIX seats and more.

In India, Hyundai will most likely launch it with three engine options: 1.2-litre NA petrol motor, 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 1.5-litre diesel burner. Inclusion of a DCT unit is expected for the 1.0 turbo petrol option. Post its launch, chief competitors of the hatch will continue to be Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Volkswagen Polo and Tata Altroz.
