Fiat 500X on Jeep Renegade’s platform for 2014 Paris Motor Show
Fiat Automobiles will showcase the all-new 500X compact SUV at Paris Motor Show later this year, and will begin sales in Europe from early 2015 and then in the US. Originally announced in July 2012, the SUV is slated to replace Fiat Sedici, which was developed jointly by Fiat and Suzuki specially for European market. It is scheduled to start production this year in the SATA plant of Melfi in Basilicata, Southern Italy, where Jeep Renegade will also be manufactured.
The 500X crossover will be built on the same platform as the new Jeep Renegade, with features shared from 500 and 500L. It carries a magnified silhouette as its smaller sibbling – 500 hatchback, but with four doors and higher ground clearance. Additional styling trims on 500X is expected, to make it look rugged, like the black motif around wheel arches.
Powertrain options to include a two cylinder 0.9 litre TwinAir engine, a four cylinder 1.4 litre MultiAir engine and a 1.3 litre Multijet turbo diesel engine. All above power plants will be seen in European models, as it is yet to be seen which engines will be available in the U.S. It is believed that Jeep Renegade’s 1.4 litre and 2.4 litre engines might be chosen for 500X in the U.S. However, Chrysler’s new nine-speed auto gearbox should be offered with atleast one of engine options. Prices are not revealed officially, but it can be expected to carry a tag of around $20,000 (approx Rs 12 lakhs).
Fiat has no plans for 500X launch in India, the only SUV Fiat fans can wait for in India is Avventura, expected to go on sale in August this year.
