General Motors India has no (medium-term) plans to bring their Chevy Volt to the Indian market. During an interview, GM India VP Ankush Agora said that though they had been studying the scope of launching electric vehicles in India, it is still subjected to lot of factors like support from government in terms of infrastructure, incentives, etc. Negotiation is already in place but they don't expect to receive any support yet in the near future.
The Chevy Volt is an electric car that uses gas to produce its own electricity, and will be launch in the US in November 2010.
"We are looking at various options to develop a fully electric car for India on our own, but it's difficult to say when. We have the technology and will explore every possibility to launch something made for India," Arora added. He also asserted that if India wanted to become a big player in electric vehicles, it should increase its supply of batteries since it is the key to making an electric solution commercial.
Currently, GM has the biggest battery development center in the United States and has plans of developing an EV for India on its own.
