A few years back, when Tata Motors stole the limelight with the launch of Nano, the world’s cheapest car, General Motors India had announced that they too will be launching a similar car which will compete with Tata Nano.
Earlier yesterday, at an event where GM India, in order to show their technological prowess, unveiled their all new Electric Beat hatchback, stated that they are no longer pursuing their dream of launching a sub – Spark small car in India.
Mr Karl Slym, President, GM India stated, “It (small car) was under discussion when the Rs 1 lakh car (Nano) came in. We have reached a decision point that it is not right for us. We did have a plan (to launch a smaller car than Spark), but no longer now. We have shelved the plans to get into that segment.”
It seems as if Nano is going to be the only car in the segment as of now. Bajaj Renault Nissan Ultra Low Cost car project, another Nano competitor, too is not making any headway.
