GM recalls Chevrolet Sail in China

General Motors is set to recall 1.5 million cars in China over safety concerns. This is one of the biggest ever car recalls in China. The recall is being resorted to due to defective bracket which could cause fuel leaks in extreme circumstances.

The recall of cars, by Shanghai General Motors, a joint venture between GM and SAIC Motor Corporation, will include two of General Motor’s most popular models, the Buick Excelle compact car and Chevrolet Sail subcompact model. 1.2 million Excelle manufactured between 2006 and 2011 are being recalled. 250,000 Chevrolet Sail sedan built between April 2009 and October 2011 are also being recalled for similar reasons.

These cars could have safety issues with bracket securing the fuel oil pump as stated by China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the recall will commence from December 30, 2013.

Defective brakes could result in fuel leaks which could prove to be dangerous and though there have been no reports of any contingencies as on date, the company is taking no chances and replacing defective parts. There has been no announcements made by US NHTSA and hence these cars in question are all Chinese built models and not imports. This means the model on sale in India is safe from this recall. (source)
