Honda Activa 125 vs Vespa LX vs Mahindra Rodeo/Duro vs Suzuki Access/Swish

Honda recently launched its much awaited 125cc segment competitor Activa 125. Bookings have commenced and we thought its time to lay out a comparison chart between Activa 125 and its rivals in the segment to help readers choose their ride for daily commute. Honda Activa 125 has rivals in the form of Vespa LX125, Mahindra Rodeo RZ, Mahindra Duro DZ, Suzuki Access and Suzuki Swish.

Honda Activa 125 vs Vespa LX vs Mahindra Rodeo-Duro vs Suzuki Access-SwishDesign- To begin with, lets look at them with eagle eyes and learn what first impression they all create. Honda Activa 125 looks very much like face lifted 110cc brother, with a nice chrome motif conjoining the turn indicators at the nose of front apron. Handlebar mounted headlamp is well complimented by piano black cap worn on top and body coloured cheeks on either side of headlamp. Rear lights are also well shaped in a single housing and help in alarming close followers of braking or turning. Nothing much to comment further on looks except that Activa lovers will like what they see in 125 version.

Rest of scooters in this segment bear humdrum looks as they are denied with looks of this decade. Talk about Kinetic Nova turned Mahindra Duro and dreary looking Rodeo of same banner, they don’t deserve to be someone’s favourite looking scooter and Suzuki’s rides also look customary these days, nothing to boast about. Except for Vespa LX which deserves an applaud for bold and striking looks which continues to appeal to riders of all age and sex. So in short, if you don’t have a fat wallet, Activa 125 would be next best choice of style.

Instrument Console – To everyone’s surprise Mahindra Rodeo is the only scooter to feature an attractive all digital instrument cluster, whereas Activa 125 bears only a digital display unit, but has an elite analog speedo. Vespa LX houses a simple retro instrument that has nothing to complain about. The Suzukis have good looking instruments too, well what more can we expect out of a cluster that houses a speedo, fuel gauge, turn indicator warning light and high beam warning light? Except, Vespa, Rodeo and Activa 125 have managed to include a clock as an added feature, that you can stare at and count while getting stuck in Indian traffic. In addition, Activa 125 and Mahindra Rodeo have trip meters! Yay!!??

Performance – Piaggio Vespa LX stays on top with 10 horses coming out of its engine while all others could manage only a fraction above 8. Out of those, Activa 125 takes lead. In terms of torque rating too, Vespa LX surpasses Activa 125 and all others stay behind. With such scooters that deliver power via CVT (Continuously Varying Transmission), it is hard to differentiate performance and power delivery just by max. power and peak torque figures. It requires spending time with each one to learn how it behaves to your touch. Hence, on that note, we think except for Mahindra brothers, all others have good power delivery in low and mid range, with Vespa LX displaying least rubber band effect and Suzuki being nicer to rev.

Talking about refinement, Honda is always on top followed by Piaggio, and Suzuki just marginally behind. Well, Mahindra is Mahindra on that front, being raw in terms of ride quality.

Fuel Efficiency – While all manufacturers claim fuel efficiency of over 55 kmpl on at least one of their products, in reality, none of them actually perform so well in city conditions. They all give about 40-45 kmpl. What counts for a debate between these scooters is their capacity to store as much fuel to help minimise shuttling from petrol filling stations to home and work. In this regard, Vespa LX claims top honours with 8.5 litres of fuel capacity, while rest can store about 6 litres on average. We don’t have Activa 125′s capacity yet, but we do not expect it to come close to Vespa LX’s.

Pricing – The Mahindra Scooters are lowest in terms of price between Rs. 42,149 and Rs. 46,657 , followed by Suzuki brothers priced between Rs. 47,326 and Rs. 52, 944. Activa 125 is priced between Rs. 52,447 and Rs. 58,156 (ex-showroom Delhi), while the premium Vespa LX demands Rs. 67,462 (all ex-showroom Delhi).

We all know how Activa dominated the scooter market for long time, still is and Suzuki Access remained top of 125cc segment. Now, Activa 125 is most likely to trump Suzuki down one place, taking Honda to top of this segment. With its well powered engine, expected refinement and looking more in trend than Suzukis, Activa 125 is expected go off charts on sales without surprise.
