Honda BR-V vs Honda Mobilio vs Maruti Ertiga

The Honda BR-V brings a fresh flavor to the 7-seat family car segment which is currently populated by cars that adopt traditional MPV body style. The latest Honda adopts SUV-ish ensembles to differentiate itself from its MPV sibling, the Mobilio but it targets the same audience base. Here is a brief tech spec comparo of the BR-V, Mobilio and Maruti Ertiga.

Let’s start with the petrol variants. Since the BR-V is essentially an enhanced derivative of the Mobilio, the engine specs are identical. Both employ a 1.5-litre petrol engine which puts out 119 PS and 145 Nm of torque. However, the newbie benefits from a 6-speed manual transmission while the Mobilio makes do with a 5-speed unit. The Maruti Ertiga packs a 1.4-lire petrol engine which is mated to a 5-MT or 4-AT to produce 92.4 PS and 130 Nm of torque. Not surprisingly, the Ertiga emerges as the most fuel efficient petrol MPV with a mileage of 17.5 kmpl (ARAI). In comparision, the manual BR-V emerges as the least fuel efficient of the lot with a mileage of 15.4 kmpl.

When it comes to diesel variants, again the BR-V and Moblio share their 1.5-litre engine which produces 100 PS and 200 Nm of torque. The Ertiga’s 1.3-litre unit develops 90 PS and 200 Nm of torque. The BR-V gets a 6-speed MT while the other two cars opt for a 5-MT. The Ertiga benefits from the SHVS mild hybrid system and sports the best mileage figure of 25.42 kmpl. The Mobilio is not far behind at 24.5 kmpl while the BR-V’s focus on performance see its mileage rating drop to 21.9 kmpl.

In terms of dimensions, the Ertiga is the smallest and BR-V is the largest but the margin is not huge. All the three vehicles offer 7-seats and modest boot space with the three-row of seats up. Of course, you can fold the rear seats to generate more space for the luggage.

The Honda twins offer projector headlamps, touchscreen infotainment system among other usual features whereas the Ertiga makes its case with SHVS mild hybrid system and touchscreen infotainment system.

Not surprisingly, the Maruti Ertiga emerges as the most affordable choice by far. The Honda BR-V commands a clear premium over the Mobilio.
