Honda Activa helps HMSI stay on top – Scooter sales Sep 2019

A complete recovery may take some more time, but an improvement can certainly be seen in scooter sales in September 2019. A total of 5,78,848 units were sold, which translates into MoM gain of 13.21 percent. Most scooter manufacturers have launched attractive discounts and benefits, which appear to have helped achieve a decent bump in sales. However, YoY growth continues to be negative at -17.22 percent in September.

Honda leads the scooter segment with sales of 3,00,709 units in September 2019. MoM sales have grown 10.12 percent while YoY sales are down -13.69 percent. Honda’s top selling scooter continues to be Activa, which has contributed more than 82% sales in September.

Activa has also helped the company to achieve the title of most preferred two-wheeler brand in the country. Activa is also the first scooter in India to be offered with a BS-VI compliant engine. Second bestselling scooter in Honda’s portfolio is Dio, which also happens to be the top exported scooter from India.

TVS takes the second place with sales of 1,12,635 units in September. This translates into MoM growth of 8.07 percent and YoY loss of -17.85 percent. Bestselling TVS scooters continue to be Jupiter and Ntorq, both of which have registered positive MoM growth in September.

At third place is Hero with sales of 75,252 units in September. Hero has registered the biggest MoM gain of 77.06 percent. Sales in August stood at 42,501 units. However, YoY sales are down -32.31 percent. Bestselling Hero scooters in September include Maestro, Pleasure, Destini and Duet.

At fourth place, Suzuki has registered sales of 58,353 units in September. Suzuki has a lot to cheer, as both its MoM and YoY sales have improved by 0.21 percent and 2.52 percent, respectively. Suzuki currently offers Access and Burgman, both of which are among the popular options in the country.

Next is Yamaha with sales of 24,732 units in September. Festive season hasn’t turned out favourable for Yamaha, as both MoM and YoY sales are down -5.39 percent and -32.45 percent, respectively. Yamaha’s bestselling scooters in September include Fascino and Ray.

Vespa comes in at sixth place with sales of 3,852 units in September. While MoM sales have grown 2.47 percent, YoY sales are down -34.52 percent. At seventh place is Aprilia with sales of 3,315 units. Aprilia’s MoM sales are down -2.18 percent, but its YoY figures have improved by 5.94 percent.
