American Honda has recalled 2,900 ATVs after investigation revealed that a weld on the vehicles upper suspension arm was not able to withstand extreme pressure. Testing revealed that the weld would separate when pressure exerted on the suspension arm was extreme.

This caused drivers of the ATV to lose control and crash. The recalled models are TRX420TM and TRX420TE that belong to the 2012 Honda FourTrax Rancher two-wheel drive. The ATVs from this production line are Green or Red and have the word ‘Honda’ displayed on either side of the fuel tank.

The word ‘Rancher’ is displayed on the left of the rear fender, and the front cowl. The recalled ATVs have been sold through Honda ATV dealerships across the U.S. for a price between $5,100 and $5,300. The models of recalled Honda ATVs were available with retail dealers between 2011 to January 2012.

Official Notice from Honda

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

Dear TRX420TE/TM Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

What is the reason for this notice?

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Honda is conducting a safety recall of certain 2012 model year Honda TRX420TE/TM (2WD) All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Our records indicate that you own one of these ATVs.

What is the problem?

A weld on the front right upper suspension arm on affected ATVs may fail due to insufficient weld penetration. If the weld fails, the right front wheel of the ATV may suddenly and unexpectedly angle outward causing the steering to pull towards the right side. This could negatively affect the rider’s ability to steer the ATV and potentially lead to a crash.

What should you do?

Call any authorized Honda ATV dealer and make an appointment to have the right upper suspension arm of your ATV replaced, free of charge. Replacement of the upper suspension arm may be completed in approximately 15 minutes. Please plan to leave your ATV for a longer period of time to allow the dealer flexibility in scheduling. Honda recommends that affected ATVs not be ridden until the upper suspension arm has been replaced.

For assistance with locating a Honda ATV dealer, you may call Honda Motorcycle Customer Support at 1-866-784-1870 or use the “find a dealer” option at http://www.powersports.honda.com

What to do if you feel this notice is in error:

Our records show that you are the current owner or lessee of a 2012 model year TRX420TE/TM involved in this recall. If this is not the case, or the name/address information is not correct, complete, sign, and return the enclosed, postage-paid Information Change Card. We will then update our records.

If prior to receiving this notice, you paid to have the right side upper suspension arm replaced because of an improper weld, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Please refer to the enclosed Request for Reimbursement form for eligibility requirements and the reimbursement procedure.

We apologize for any inconvenience this recall may cause you.

Sincerely,
American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
