In a ceremony earlier today, Hyundai unveiled their first full Electric Vehicle, named BluOn. On the occasion, Korean President Mr Lee Myung-Bak was invited to take a test drive of the new car. Hyundai Motors VC, Mr Hyun-Soon Lee was too present, sitting next to the President. Lee said, "Consumers' interests and demand for eco-friendly cars are rising and securing such advanced technology is critical in becoming an industry leader. Hyundai is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and satisfying market needs."
First shown to the world at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, BlueOn is the electric version of Hyundai's popular hatchback variant i10. With a fully charged battery, BlueOn will be able to run for 140 kms. The tops speed of BlueOn is 130 kmph. It can be charged with a 220 V outlet, a standard outlet in many Asian countries including Korea. BlueOn's battery can charge itself upto 80% when charged via 380 V fast charging station.
Hyundai also stated that BlueOn is the product of over a year's R&D and $34 million. Hyundai will distribute 30 BlueOn within the Korean Government as a pilot project and plans to manufacture 2500 BlueOn for the Korean citizens will be executed by 2012.
