Hyundai to call new i20 as Grand i20, i30 not coming to India

Exactly about a year back, Hyundai launched the new Grand i10. This car was expected to replace the existing i10 and it did, but not in India. Hyundai continued to sell the old i10 along with new Grand i10. Same is expected to happen with new i20.

Considering the overwhelming response received for the Grand i10, as it has reached its 1 lakh unit mark following launch in September 2013, the company probably plans to launch an all-new version of i20, Grand i20. It will be placed above the existing i20, and will come with more features and style.

Next generation i20 or the Grand i20, is a global car, which is scheduled to make a European debut at the Paris Motor Show (Grand i10 too made its debut at the Paris Motor Show last year) in September 2014. But before the car makes its European debut, it is expected to be unveiled in India, next month.

Code-named IB as on date, new Grand i20 will come in with fluidic features and will sit on a longer wheelbase resulting in added space in its interiors. However, this longer wheelbase will ensure that the i20 will still measure less than 4 meters in length as even a millimeter more will bring upon it a higher tax resulting in increased pricing.

Other features will include push button start, reverse camera, automatic day and night rear view mirrors and automatic headlights among others. Exteriors will be noted with a new and lower front grille, vertical tail lights, tailgate mounted spoiler and turn signals incorporated into its ORVMs. Up turned headlights with metal inserts add more character to the new i20 while number plate is also more strategically situated.

Engine specifications on board 2015 Grand i20 will remain same as seen on the existing i20, in the form of 1.4 liter diesel engine offering 89 bhp power and 1.2 liter Kappa engine offering 83 bhp which is also seen on the Xcent. The engine is mated to a five speed automatic gearbox.

Though no pricing have been revealed as on date, one can expect Hyundai Grand i20 to come in priced in the region of INR 5-8 lakhs while it will compete with new Maruti Suzuki Swift, Volkswagen Polo GT variants, Fiat Punto EVO, Tata Bolt.
