Jaguar partners Bloodhound SSC to go for 800 mph before 1000 mph

Testing was scheduled on the soft Hakskeen Pan desert surface in Northern Cape of South Africa. All-wheel drive F-Type R Coupe, which makes its global debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Motor Show was part of a vital communications test for Bloodhound SSC team.

Jaguar supports Bloodhound SSC record runs

Jaguar’s tech knowledge and engineering innovation prowess provides direct performance benefits to Bloodhound project. As ‘Main Partner’ and ‘Innovation Partner’ Jaguar will work with Bloodhound for a World Land Speed Record above 1,000 mph, which now stands at 763.035 mph set by Andy Green in Thrust SSC in 1997. Andy will drive the Bloodhound Supersonic Car in an attempt to break the record in 2015 and go for 1000 mph in 2016.

Partnership details point to integration of the Jaguar engine into Bloodhound SSC. Jaguar’s 5.0-litre 550 PS supercharged V8 engine will provide hydraulic services and drive its oxidiser pump. The pump will supply 800-litres of High Test Peroxide (HTP) to the rocket in 20 seconds, akin to 40-litres (over nine gallons) each second.

Jaguar’s assistance extends to development of Andy Green’s cockpit design, and precision control for essential systems including electrics, hydraulics, engine start and control systems, safety monitoring and braking. Jaguar will provide 2 high performance Rapid Response Vehicles to support Bloodhound SSC in the desert during its 2015 and 2016 record runs.

Bloodhound SSC is being assembled at Bloodhound Technical Centre in Bristol, UK for a scheduled roll out in the summer of 2015 for its UK runway testing up to 200mph (321km/h) at the Aerohub, Newquay, UK. The project then heads to South Africa for high speed testing to reach 800 mph (1,287 km/h), and returns to UK to review data before finally heading back to South Africa in 2016 for a 1,000 mph (1,609 km/h) record attempt.
