Lamborghini Urus SUV production planned to commence in 2017
Lamborghini first announced back in May 2013 that they would unveil a production version of Urus concept in 2017. But there was no mention of when the production of Urus SUV will commence.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Lamborghini CEO, Stephen Winkelmann confirmed that the production is planned to commence in 2017. Lamborghini Urus SUV is to be built on the same MLB platform as is seen on the next generation VW Group SUVs, Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and Bentley SUV. It is slated to receive a twin turbo V8 engine along with a plug in hybrid with suggested output of 600 hp.
Performance on board the new Lamborghini Urus SUV will be augmented with efficient use of lighter carbon fiber materials taking the place of steel and aluminum sections with one of these sections being a T shaped structure extending from central tunnel to rear suspension hinging.
For Lamborghini, the Urus will not be their first SUV, as the company had introduced the LM002 SUV in 1986-1993 which was designed as a military vehicle. The reason to enter the SUV segment, is because of the rise in demand. 2013 saw a sharp rise in sales of premium SUVs across important markets like Europe, US, and China.
