M&M has confirmed that the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal has rejected its excise classification of Commander Vehicles appeal.
The appeal was made in opposition to a demand that required payment of differential excise duty of 2.16 billion rupees ($46.5 million). Alongside, a penalty of 880.8 million rupees too was to be paid. The penalty was related to classification of a Commander vehicle as a 10-seater in the 1991 to 1996 period.
The rejection has now prompted Mahindra and Mahindra t make an appeal to the Supreme Court. A statement regarding the aforementioned events has been released by the company.
