While Mahindra & Mahindra have surpassed Tata Motors in the Indian auto market, the company is training its sights on becoming the largest auto manufacturer in Sri Lankan soil in the coming two years. With only a few thousand vehicles coming in the way between Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra this should not be too difficult a feat for the Mumbai based auto manufacturers.

At last week’s shareholders AGM at Tata Motors, Ratan Tata spoke about M&M’s performance and expressed regret that they have overtaken Tata Motors where sales in the country were concerned. In the first quarter of this financial year, M&M sold 61,504 units while Tata Motors trailed at 60,405 units. This makes M&M the third largest passenger vehicle maker in domestic sales following Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.

Now with sights set on Sri Lankan markets, which is the largest export market for M&M, the company sold 11000 vehicles last fiscal while in the 2010 fiscal they sold only 500 units. It is this marked improvement that has prompted the company to surge ahead in a bid to overtake Tata Motors. This fiscal M&M plan on increasing sales in Sri Lanka to 15000 vehicles on their way to gain leadership position in the island soon.

Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. has stepped in as title sponsor of the 2012 Sri Lanka premier League which began on 11th of August with 7 teams participating at the inaugural games. The sponsor deal is certainly a great move towards brand awareness in a vountry where cricket is important, and the auto industry small. The 2012 SLPL Mahindra Man of the Tournament will be gifted a XUV 500.
