Mahindra presents BAJA SAEINDIA 2014
February 24, 2013, Indore: The much awaited 7th edition of the Baja SAE India 2014 finally came to an end yesterday at Pithampur Indore, leaving behind many exhilarating moments. About 106 teams had competed for the title in the endurance round. The event took place at the NATRIP facility in Indore.
Sri Govindram Siksaria Institute of Technology and Science, Indore were announced winners of the 7th edition of BAJA series in India, College of Engineering, Pune and Vellore Institute of Technology, VELLORE were declared first runners-up and second runners-up respectively.
About 327 teams had registered in the 7th year of BAJA SAE India series, out of which 125 teams have qualified for the finale. This year was remarkable with 6500 students from different parts of the country working towards BAJA SAEIndia 2014’s theme ‘Raise the Bar’ and achieving it with great success.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director & President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “It’s heartening to see thousands of students coming together once again to celebrate the spirit of BAJA. Increase in participation from colleges and BAJA SAEIndia’s growth since inception indicates its growing popularity and national significance. Mr. Shrikant Marathe, Director, ARAI said, “To meet Technology Road Map of India’s vision, we need lots of good engineers. This Human Resource can double up by encouraging women to enter into engineering. Baja is one such initiative, where we orient them towards STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)”.
Mr. Sanjay Nibandhe, Convener for BAJA 2014 and DGM Proto Development, R & D, Nashik at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd said, “BAJA SAEINDIA is a platform that offers students a chance to showcase their talent and skills in presence of auto experts in addition to presenting them with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the industry of which they aspire to be a part. Amongst the thrill and adventure, we assess the abilities of participants by testing them on parameters such as leadership skills and theoretic and practical knowledge.”
On a conclusive note he added, “Indore is a hub of industry and young talent. Its proximity to infrastructure such as the NATRIP facility makes it the ideal venue for hosting an event of this nature. The enthusiasm of the city is palpable simply from its response– Indore has shown the highest participation closely following cities such as Pune and Chennai. The dignitaries, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director & President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Chairman BAJA SAEINDIA Steering Comittee, Guest of Honour Mr. Tom Gillespie, Director, Mechanical Simulation, USA & Dr. S. Mantha, Chairman, AICTE, Mr. Sanjay Nibandhe, Convener for BAJA 2014 and DGM Proto Development, R & D, Nashik at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd and Mr. Shrikant Marathe, Director, ARAI presented numerous other awards to the teams for static events. Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering from Pune, bagged the Engineering Design award whereas Institute of Technology, Nirma University, Ahmedabad and Sinhgad College of Engineering, Pune won the Go Green- Emissions Award. Special awards like Dronacharya award was given to the team of Institute of Technology, NIRMA UNIVERSITY, Ahmedabad and Medi-Caps Institute of Technology and Management from Indore, while the Chairman’s award was presented to Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology from New Delhi. College of Engineering, Pune walked away most of the awards in Dynamic events category like the Manoeuvrability etc. The Endurance award which assessed vehicles ability to operate at a speed over rough terrain was however bagged by Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology, Sangrur- Punjab, followed by Sri Govindram Siksaria Institute of Technology and Science, Indore.
The students walked away not just with the excitement and a sense of accomplishment for having competed in such a testing event, but also a fair amount of prize money as well which was about Rs 31, 50, 000/-.
The three day event started with basic Static Evaluation round which comprised of Design Evaluation, Cost Evaluation and Marketing Presentation. In the final round, the teams showcased their prototype of a rugged single seat, off-road recreational four-wheel vehicle and were evaluated on various parameters, including engineering design, cost and technology innovation. The objective of the competition was to simulate real world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Each team’s goal was to create a safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive prototype without any direct involvement from professional fabricators. However, the teams were free to design their own transmissions with the only restriction being the speed limit to 60kmph. The Dynamic Evaluation Round tested the vehicles for acceleration, speed, hill climb and manoeuvrability and the Durability Evaluation Round saw the vehicles undergo endurance tests. The Endurance Event assessed each vehicle’s ability to operate continuously and at a speed over rough terrain containing obstacles in any weather conditions.
