Mahindra’s compact SUV, codenamed S101 as on date, is based on a new monocoque platform from Mahindra and Ssangyong. In a sub four meter segment, the new S101 will be positioned below the Mahindra Quanto and Scorpio SUV, while it will compete with the Ford EcoSport once launched.
Strikingly similar in exterior make up to the Mahindra XUV500, the S101 will be in a sub 4 meter category contributing to a lower pricing as it attracts lower excise duty. The new model will sport both petrol and diesel engine options in the form of 1.2 liter petrol and 1.5 liter diesel engines mated to 5 speed manual gearboxes. The upcoming S101 will appeal to buyers due to its spacious interiors and competitive pricing which is rumored to be as low as INR 5 lakhs. Pitted against Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport, the S101 could be the most affordable SUV in the country.
Mahindra & Mahindra sales during the month of March saw a marginal decline at 51,636 units. Domestic sales stood at 48,490 units as against 49,225 units in March 2013. Sales of Scorpio, XUV500, Xylo, Bolero and Verito stood at 23,433 units in the last month as compared to 25,847 units in March 2013. With the compact new SUV, Mahindra expects to bring a boost in sales.
