Mahindra S101 compact SUV to feature three cylinder petrol engine?
Mahindra & Mahindra are noted for their range of diesel powertrains in their model lineup, which mainly consist of utility vehicles. But with demand increasing the compact segment, Mahindra is finding itself at a disadvantage as they do not have a small petrol engine to offer. Mahindra is working towards developing two new small petrol engines, with the help of their South Korean company, SsangYong Motors.
Speaking to Autocar India, Dr Pawan Goenka, Executive Director M&M, said, “We are currently working on two engines, a three and a four cylinder, coming out of the same platform. These would be mainstream engines for our petrol driven UV range and would power vehicles much smaller than what we have today. Our earlier petrol engines had some compromises because they were based on a diesel engine but our new petrol engines will be an independent, grounds up development and therefore it will be as good as any other petrol engine in the market at that time.”
The new engine will most probably be first seen on the compact SUV which is currently being developed by Mahindra. Codenamed S101, this new SUV will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport. The compact SUV segment will see many launches in the next 2-3 years as many manufacturers are working on launching product in the segment. This include, Maruti‘s version of Suzuki iV-4, Honda and Hyundai. (S101 image credit : Motor Vikatan)
