Mahindra S101 Compact Crossover SUV spied testing in Chennai
Mahindra S101 (codename) compact SUV is spied testing in Chennai recently, thanks to avid RushLane reader Venkat for sending us spy shots. The Ford EcoSport and upcoming Volkswagen Taigun rival is expected to launch in 2015.
Mahindra has not taken off camouflage on S101 baby SUV yet. That and what appears to be temporary / test purpose horizontal tail lamps still remain as seen in earlier spy shots. Massive snout of Mahindra codename S101 seems to carry production version headlamp units, Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVM) have large coverage area. It seems there are rails on top of the sloping roof of S101. Rear wheels are fitted with wheel cover while front set of steel rims are left open in the test mule. We don’t know if rear door will have spare wheel mount like Ford EcoSport and Fiat Avventura do yet. Rear windscreen of spied S101 has wiper.
Mahindra is working with SsangYong team to develop 6 new engines. Mahindra S101 will use a 1.2 litre three cylinder petrol engine which would produce around 85 PS maximum power. Diesel variant would use a sub 1.5 litre mill producing around 90 PS max. power.
Earlier spy shots of this sub-4 metre mini SUV revealed interiors, which showed dashboard mounted gear lever and steering wheel design bearing resemblance to XUV 500’s. Venkat managed to take a peek and notice that Mahindra S101’s instrument cluster was similar to the one in Mahindra Scorpio VLX, with an illuminated LCD display between speedo and tachometer dials.
Price of Mahindra S101 can be expected to be similar to that of premium hatchbacks, in the range of Rs. 5.0 lakhs to Rs. 7.5 lakhs.
