Mahindra has been sensing the heat in its prized segment ever since launch of the Ford EcoSport that immediately grabbed a big slice of the pie eating into sales of the Mahindra Quanto and Scorpio. The upcoming S101 compact SUV will sit below Quanto and directly compete with both EcoSport and to be launched compact SUVs from Honda, Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Datsun and Volkswagen.
Built on a monocoque platform, Mahindra S101 compact SUV will receive a new 1.2 liter petrol engine developed jointly by Mahindra and SsangYong. It will also receive a 1.5 liter diesel engine. Model on test disclosed tail lights made of basic bulbs indicating early stages of development. Earlier spy shots revealed 3+3 seating arrangement with bench type seats at the front.
Dashboard mounted gear lever were also evident while speculated features, considering the S101 is an EcoSport rival, could include automatic climate control, a host of infotainment features besides safety features such as ABS, EBD, 4 airbags and ESP. Besides S101 compact SUV, Mahindra is also working on Scorpio facelift to launch in the months ahead and next generation Bolero codenamed U301 for launch in 2016 while a global MPV is also in the making.
