Mahindra & Mahindra will make an announcement within 2-3 weeks regarding the launch of their pick-up trucks in the United States. This US move is important for the company to be recognised as a global force in premier SUV and pick-up trucks category. Their US entry has already been delayed due to emission certifications.

Their application to the U.S. Environment Protection Agency would be made as soon as tests are completed and application processing takes about a month. Mahindra's primary competition in the US will be Ford Motor's 2010 Ford Ranger and Toyota's Tacoma models.

M&M boasts of a 65% market share in utility vehicles in the Indian auto market. Their successful models Scorpio, Bolero and the Xylo compete with Tata Motors, Toyota, and General Motors in the home front. The company aims to sell the Xylo in Europe by the within next year. They are also looking at doubling sales figures in India and aim at quadruple growth in terms of exports.

I’m really looking forward to the announcement of the launch date. I’ve been looking forward to these trucks ever since I learned of Mahindra’s plans to bring them to the US. The current state of the compact/midsize pickup segment is unacceptable – the Ranger, Colorado, Canyon and Dakota are, in all likelihood, on their way out. Manufacturers have completely ignored the light duty pick up user. They need to understand two things:

    - Not everyone wants a truck the size of a house
    - Diesel is not only for heavy duty pickups. Diesel technology delivers such benefits as engine durability and fuel mileage that all truckers would welcome.

It’s great that the Mahindra TR20 and TR40 deliver both in size and fuel mileage. And let’s not forget their payload capacity.
