GM Global CEO, Mary Barra to meet PM Narendra Modi
General Motors’ highest in chain of command, Mary Barra (global Chief Executive Officer), Tim Solso (Chairman) and Stefan Jacoby (Head of International Operations) will be in India in September 2014 to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
They will be attending Annual Convention of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on 12th September 2014. Mary Barra will be the keynote speaker at the meet. Barra is a career GM executive with 34 years of experience at General Motors, and is the first female CEO of a major global auto manufacturer. After serving at a variety of roles in global product development, purchasing and supply chain, she was appointed as CEO in January 2014. The company is second largest car-maker in the world (by volume).
Considering involvement of General Motors’ top officials at the annual convention of SIAM, it is safe to assume that Indian auto market is gaining importance. It is believed that industries will gather better support from new government and sales decline in car market will be turned around.
Chevrolet Sales India Private Limited, a division of General Motors India Private Limited has been facing hefty losses due to decline in passenger car sales. New models like Sail sedan and Sail UV-A hatchback did not create a positive scene for the company and further new products are not likely to launch any soon.
Considering Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on promoting manufacturing in India, the meet is expected to result in some big announcements. GM India has two manufacturing plants, one each in Halol – Gujarat, and Talegaon – Maharashtra.
