Suzuki Baleno, Celerio discontinued from sales in the UK

Suzuki is revamping its UK vehicle line-up. The move will see Celerio and Baleno sales conclude by end of August 2019. While the vehicles are still visible on the website, no new, unregistered cars will be available for sale by month end. A limited number of ex-demonstrator (demo) cars will be sold.

Suzuki is refocusing its model range to the best-selling UK models. That would mean – Ignis, Swift, S-Cross and Vitara. With the shift in focus, Suzuki Celerio and Baleno sales is being discontinued in UK.

Suzuki is prepping its vehicle range for future emission regulations in 2020, details for which will be announced in the days to come. Celerio and Baleno have enjoyed a few years of sales having been launched in 2015, and 2016, respectively. However, both cars haven’t been the strongest sellers in Europe.

Both Baleno and Celerio sales have been low, as compared to other Suzuki cars on sale in the UK. Suzuki Baleno sales in 2018 stood at about 15k. Celerio sales stood at 21k for 2018. In comparison, Ignis sales were at twice the number.

Baleno on sale in the UK is made in India, by Suzuki Motor India. The plant is located near Mehsana in Gujarat. This is the same plant where the Baleno for India is also manufactured. Suzuki plant in India not only manufacturers Baleno for India and the UK, but also for about 100 countries across the world.

In comparison to UK sales, Baleno sales in India are completely opposite. Here, Baleno is one of the best selling car in the country. Sales in July 2019 alone stood at 10,482. Though decline was steep, sales are in the top tier. There are months where Baleno sales have crossed the 20k mark. Last year, it averaged over 18k units a month. It is the best selling car in the segment in India.

Speaking about the 2nd car, Maruti Suzuki Celerio sales in India has now dipped below 5k a month but was selling about 7k units a year earlier. Unlike Suzuki UK, Maruti Suzuki India has no plans to discontinue either of the two cars.

Baleno and Celerio are not the only two made in India cars which have faced the axe in the UK. Some months back, it was the made in India Ford Figo which was discontinued from Europe.
