Maruti Celerio diesel discontinued? Disappears from official website

Maruti Suzuki India launched their new small car Celerio back in 2014. At that time it was only offered with a petrol engine option. Later in June 2015, the company launched Celerio diesel, which was equipped with company’s smallest ever diesel engine.

To date, Maruti Suzuki depends on Fiat for diesel engine. This is the first diesel engine which Maruti Suzuki has made. This twin cylinder engine produces 47 bhp peak power at 3,500 rpm and 125 Nm torque at 2,000 rpm. This is impressive considering that it has a cubic capacity of just 793 cc.

Another interesting fact of this engine is that when we compare the torque output per cc, this tiny engine delivers more torque as compared to what the diesel heart of Swift delivers. To put some numbers in perspective, new Maruti diesel 800 cc engine delivers 0.16 Nm per cc, while the 1.25 litre diesel engine of Swift delivers 0.15 Nm per cc. All this, while delivering a record mileage of 27.62 kmpl (ARAI certified).

The new engine is also the lightest in its class, weighing a total of just 89 kgs, thanks to the all aluminium engine block. Other features on board include hydraulic clutch, new gen 5 speed manual transmission, optimized gear ratio, effortless gear shift, optimized engine load on clutch pedal and clutch release system.

These interesting features, numbers, and an affordable price tag, allowed Maruti to aim for sales figures in thousands for the Celerio diesel variant. But that was not the case.

When Maruti first started work on the small diesel engine, the market trend was such that more and more consumers were considering diesel option. But this has changed as of today. More people are now inclined towards buying petrol cars, thanks to reducing gap between respective fuel prices. In fact, Maruti management has stated on record that they are not hopeful of small diesel cars in the future.

It seems that they are not waiting any longer as the Celerio diesel variant has surprisingly disappeared from the official Celerio website. It is believed that due to low demand, Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the Celerio diesel from the market.

We are awaiting Maruti’s confirmation on the same.
