Maruti Celerio diesel will be India’s most fuel efficient car at 30 kmpl

Maruti Suzuki’s new 800cc diesel motor, smaller than the 1000cc diesel engine currently seen on board Chevrolet Beat, is a twin cylinder engine capable of producing about 35 PS peak power and expected to return approximately 30 kmpl.

This engine will make its way to the Maruti Celerio which as on date is powered by a 3 cylinder K Series 1.0 liter petrol engine producing peak power of 67 PS and peak torque of 90 Nm mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. The Celerio with AMT gearbox has proved to be more in demand accounting for over 51% of total sales. Celerio hatchback sales with a diesel engine are also expected to increase, though it is not yet confirmed whether the diesel version will receive an AMT gearbox.

This upcoming 800cc diesel engine is also estimated to power the new Eeco van to be launched in 2016 thus making it the first Maruti Suzuki diesel van in the country. The present Maruti Eeco is available with only by petrol and CNG options while the Eeco with its diesel powertrain will be able to compete with Tata Ace Magic and M&M Maxximo.

Maruti Suzuki India has always offered their customers the most fuel efficient cars in the country. But, over the past few years, entry of new cars with new engines has put Maruti on the backfoot, with none of their cars in the top 10 list of most fuel efficient cars in India. With the new 800 cc diesel engine, Maruti will once again take the top position in the list.
