Maruti Suzuki Ciaz BS4 Diesel Discontinued – No BS6 Update

Ahead of new emission norms that come into effect from April 1, 2020, Maruti Suzuki has discontinued BS4 Ciaz diesel variant.

Maruti had probably stopped production of Ciaz diesel much earlier. As of now, only Ciaz petrol BS4 and Ciaz petrol BS6 are available for sale. It may be recalled that Ciaz BS6 was launched in January 2020 and it came only in petrol variant. Ciaz is among the many cars that won’t be getting BS6 diesel option. Several other Maruti cars face the same fate, as the company does not want to burden its customers with heavy pricing. Affordability is one of the strong points of Maruti cars and the company surely does not want to lose that tag.

BS4 Ciaz diesel is powered a 1.5-litre DDiS engine that was entirely developed in-house. The motor generates 95 hp of max power and 225 Nm of max torque. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. There was no automatic option for this engine in Ciaz. Although this engine has been discontinued, it is possible that a BS6 version of this engine may be made available in the future. If there’s considerable demand from customers, Maruti may launch BS6 Ciaz diesel by 2021.

If the 1.5-litre DDiS engine makes a comeback in BS6 avatar, it would probably be used for other Maruti cars as well. Some of Maruti’s bestsellers like Brezza and Ertiga could get the updated diesel engine. However, the company has not confirmed any such possibilities at this point of time.

An entirely different scenario could also emerge. As the focus shifts to electric vehicles, Maruti may entirely abandon the diesel idea. Petrol will continue to be used as the transition fuel till the ambitious dream of an all-electric ecosystem is achieved. As far as BS6 is concerned, most automakers in the country appear to be following the same approach as Maruti. However, carmakers like Hyundai and Ford come across as exceptions, as they are offering both petrol and diesel options in BS6 configuration.

Ciaz BS6 petrol utilizes the same 1.5-litre K15B engine as earlier, which has been updated to meet new emission norms. The engine is capable of generating 105 hp power and 138 Nm torque. Transmission options include 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic.

At the time of BS6 Ciaz launch, Maruti had also launched top-spec Ciaz-S variant. The sedan comes with several cosmetic enhancements such as dual-tone exteriors, black accents, multi-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamp garnish and ORVM cover. Interiors have also been updated with silver accents for a more premium look and feel.
