Maruti Suzuki sales up 33%, while Hyundai sales dip 7.6%
The month of June 2014 proved to be one of great success for Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) as the country’s largest automaker reported a 33% increase in total sales. MSIL total sales in June stood at 1,12,773 units as against 84,455 units in June 2013. Small cars were in greater demand.
Sales in the compact segment, which included Swift, Estilo and Ritz, increased 6.2% from 20,996 units sold in June 2013 to 22,293 units sold last month. The company’s Swift also noted increased sales from 12,548 units in June 2013 to 15,990 units in June 2014 while sales of SX4 increased marginally by 2.5% from 314 units last June to 322 units in June 2014.
While there were no sales of the Kizashi, the company’s UVs such as Gypsy, Grand Vitara and Ertiga saw a marginal increase and the Omni and Eeco increased 42%. MSIL besides noting increased domestic sales also saw exports increase by 58.4% from 7,453 units exported last June to 11,809 units exported in June 2014.
The same success story was not mirrored by Hyundai Motors India Limited, country’s second largest car maker. They have registered a 7.6% dip in sales. The company sold 54,665 units in June 2013, compared to 50,518 units in June 2014.
33,514 units were sold in domestic markets in June 2014 as against 30,610 in June 2013 resulting in a 9.5% increase but conversely exports declined from 24,055 units in June 2013 to just 17,004 units in June 2014. Increased domestic sales are due to increased demand for Xcent, Grand and Santa Fe.
