April has had varying effects on the auto industry. While some companies recorded a rise in sales, some companies suffered a significant dip. Tata Motors sales dipped by 7% during April 2012. The company sold 60,086 units while sales of commercial vehicles fell by 6% and medium and heavy commercial vehicles dipped by 29% during April 2012. The company also recorded a dip in their passenger vehicle sales.

During April 2012, Tata Motors sales of passenger cars plunged by 7%. The company sold only 23,658 units during the month and even sales of Tata Nano which has been doing comparatively well in the past few months dropped by 20%. The only silver lining to the dark clouds of April was sales of Tata Indica range which recorded a 63% increase and stood at 6,913 units.

Maruti Suzuki on the other hand found that April was a profitable month. They recorded a 3.4% increase in YOY sales in April which was specially due to increased demand for their diesel variants of Swift hatchback, Dzire and the newly launched Ertiga LUV 2012 which was launched at a worthwhile price of Rs.5.89 lakhs.

Maruti Suzuki sales during April stood at 1,00,415 units as compared to 97,155 units in April 2011. Sales of their compact Swift, Estilo and Ritz increased by 43% while Dzire sales increased by 31.5%. Sales of smaller hatchbacks have been badly affected due to higher interest rates and booming petrol prices. Hence Maruti Suzuki saw sales of Alto A Star and Wagon R down 26% during April along with sales of SX4 while dipped by nearly 70%.
