Maruti Suzuki Celerio bookings fuelled by AMT, production increase planned
With demand for new Maruti Suzuki Celerio hatchback surpassing all expectations, Maruti Suzuki has announced amplified production to meet increased demand. The company plans on doubling production of the Celerio from a current 5000 per month to 10,000 per month.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio hatchback was launched with much fanfare at the 2014 Auto Expo. The automatic Celerio comes in at a starting price of INR 4.14 lakhs while the manual geared variant is priced from INR 3.76 lakhs. Celerio is the first car to be offered with Automatic Manual Transmission and it is this variant that has been a resounding success, instigating the company to take this decision to augment production.
Celerio demand is far exceeding supply, especially since the company has discontinued production of Ritz and A Star. Waiting periods for Celerio has been extended to as much as 5 months with a strong preference for AMT among the 30,000+ bookings garnered thus far. Since Maruti Suzuki has to depend on Italian part manufacturer, Magneti Marelli for some vital components of the Celerio AMT variant, prior to boosting production the company will seek the consensus of vendors to bring in more Celerio units into showrooms and boost production to 10000 units by July.
Analysts surmise that the new automatic Celerio will mark the beginning of a new age of automatic technology with a host of other auto majors such as Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra soon to follow suit and launch AMT technology in their vehicles.
