Compact sedans sees Maruti Suzuki Dzire sales atop, Honda Amaze, Tata Indigo eCS and Chevrolet Sail follow for September 2013
For September 2013, 16708 units of Maruti Suzuki Dzire were sold. This equates to 42.9% sales increase when compared to 11694 units sold in September 2012, which was largely because of Manesar plant shutdown last year.
A competitor here is Honda Amaze built on Brio’s platform. With a launch earlier this year, Amaze sales has been increasing month after month. 6679 units of Honda Amaze were sold here in September 2013 and accounts for 64.5% of HCIL’s domestic sales.
Chevrolet Sail sedan also launched in early 2013, while contributing to General Motors India sales has not yet emerged as a leader for the company. Built on Sail’s hatchback platform, last month the company sold 1280 compact sedan units.
Tata Indigo eCS, built on Indica’s platform, has on year on year basis been losing out these last 2 years. In October 2012, the Indigo range recorded sales of 3,706 units, lower by 52% when compared to 7,793 units sold in September 2011. Last month, Indigo and Manza sales attributed for 2778 units sold.
Compact sedan segment in India is a safe zone when auto manufacturer’s get it right. A sub 4 metre car is essential to keep price in check and these cost benefits are passed onto a customer in the form of a lower tax. Giving buyers a car that’s bigger than a regular hatchback, and smaller than a regular sedan is a move to fit the best of both, and is usually based on a hatchback wherein the wheelbase is extended.
