Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV ready to take on Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova (Photos & Video)

Earlier yesterday, Maruti Suzuki India launched their all new MPV – Multi Purpose Vehicle, Ertiga. Launched with the option of petrol and diesel powered engine, Maruti has once again managed to create a storm by pricing their new car, Ertiga aggressively. Ertiga has enough space to accommodate seven adults and comes at a starting price of Rs 5.89 lacs for the petrol variant while the diesel Ertiga base model is priced at Rs 7.30 lacs. Ertiga petrol gives a mileage of 16 kmpl whereas Ertiga diesel gives a mileage of 20 kmpl.

At the Ertiga launch in New Delhi, Mr Shinzo Nakanishi, CEO & MD, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., stated, “Ertiga is a major step forward for Maruti Suzuki. Many urban families in India are now looking for a vehicle that offers more space and flexibility than a sedan, without being bulky, bland and expensive like a utility vehicle. Ertiga is designed for these customers.”

Maruti Ertiga has been launched in a segment which is currently being dominated by Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova. Mahindra Xylo costs between Rs 7.30 lacs to Rs 10 lacs while Innova is available between Rs 8.5 lacs to Rs 12 lacs. Xylo and Innova do not have a petrol option whereas Ertiga offers thee trim petrol variants. Ertiga Diesel is available in the range of Rs 7.30 lacs to Rs 8.45 lacs.

Indian car market is a price sensitive market which is dominated by Maruti Suzuki. But since the arrival of new car manufacturers who are willing to offer smaller and affordable cars to buyers in India, Maruti’s dominance has seen a decline. With a portfolio that consists majorly of hatchbacks, Maruti Suzuki India has a market share of 40-45%. With Ertiga, Maruti plans on broadening their market.

Over the last few years, Indian car market has seen an exponential increase in demand for MPV’s. Ertiga has been launched to cater to this growing demand. Maruti Ertiga has been developed at an investment of Rs 410 crores. Ertiga is manufactured keeping the Indian car buyer in mind, but Maruti will also export Ertiga to car markets in Southeast Asia.

Mr Nakanishi said, “Ertiga is a global product and definitely we will export it to international markets, mainly in Southeast Asia and to begin with Indonesia. We have already started export of Ertiga’s completely knocked down units to Indonesia, where it will be assembled at parent Suzuki’s plant.”
