Swift is a global hatchback. Sold across the world, including developed markets like European countries, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. The new Swift hybrid variant is going to be a very important product in these markets, where the demand of hybrid vehicles is on the rise.

For India, which is also the largest market for Swift hatchback, the hybrid variant will act more like a niche product, which Maruti could launch to showcase their prowess as a modern car manufacturer.

In the meantime, the company showcased Maruti Swift Range Extender at 2014 Auto Expo. This concept is a plug in hybrid variant of Swift which will be powered by a conventional small displacement petrol engine along with an electric motor. Back in March last year, it was reported that if the car is launched, Indian govt. officials will be using them.
