Mercedes Benz will first launch GLA 220 CDI, which will come into India via the CBU route as was seen in the case of Mercedes A Class and B Class. Deliveries are expected in September or October. Apart from GLA, Mercedes Benz India is also preparing the launch of CLA 45 AMG compact sedan, which is due next month.
The GLA 220 CDI will be powered by a new 2.2 liter diesel engine offering 136 PS peak power between 3400 to 4000 rpm and 300 Nm torque between 1400-3000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph will be achieved in less than 10 seconds while top speed stands at 205 kmph.
Apart from the diesel variant, it might also be offered with a petrol unit, but at a later stage. Expect a 1.6 liter turbocharged petrol engine belting out 156 PS peak power at 3500 rpm and 250 Nm torque at 1250 to 4000 rpm. This petrol engine is Euro VI compliant and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.9 seconds reaching a top speed of 205 kmph. Both the petrol and diesel engines are mated to a 7G-DCT automatic transmission.
Mercedes Benz 220 GLA rides on a Mercedes Front Wheel Architecture (MFA) which also underpins the A Class. Exteriors sport body cladding, skid plates and roof rails while interiors also bear strong similarities to the A Class with SLS inspired AC vents and COMAND System. Mercedes Benz GLA should come in at an expected price between INR 25-35 lakhs.
