India bound Mercedes GLA compact SUV nominated for 2015 World Car of the Year
Mercedes Benz India will launch the new GLA compact SUV in India by Diwali 2014 (October). To come in with a choice of petrol and diesel engine options, the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 rival now has been nominated for the coveted award of World Car of the Year, 2015.
Mercedes Benz India is the second largest luxury car maker in the country. They do aim to become the largest, by overtaking the current leader Audi. In order to do so, Mercedes Benz is on a product offensive strategy, under which they have been launching all the latest cars in India. Most recent being CLA 45 AMG.
Speaking about the GLA for India, Zigwheels reveals that the car will be launched in October. The petrol engine will be in the form of 1.6l turbocharged GLA 200 CGI generating 156 PS max power and 205 Nm torque. It has a top speed of 250 kmph and a 0-100 kmph time of 8.9 seconds.
For diesel, it will be the same 2.2l engine which does duty on the A Class and B Class. The GLA 200 CDI delivers 136 PS max power and 300 Nm torque. It does 0-100 kmph in 10 seconds, and has a top speed of 205 kmph. Both variants will come with a dual clutch 7 speed automatic transmission. Being an SUV, a 4MATIC all wheel drive system is also expected to be on offer with the India bound GLA. Price is expected to be in the Rs 25-33 lakh segment.
Speaking about being nominated for 2015 World Car of the Year, it is still a long way to go for the GLA to win the to prize as this is the first list. The list of seven nominees will be revealed later this year on 15th December. The winner will be announced at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March next year.
