Just like its predecessor, the facelifted W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is expected to hit the Indian market in an LWB avatar
The 2020 Geneva International Motor Show will be missed for sure, but that has not stopped manufacturers from debuting the products that were supposed to be at the venue. In this regard, Mercedes-Benz has introduced the new E-Class facelift for the 2020 model year. The car will be available in a wagon avatar as well.
Based on the fifth-generation (W213) E-Class that made its debut back in 2016, the facelifted model brings a host of changes and improvements in terms of styling, equipment and engine choices. In the Indian market, the 2020 Mercedes E Class is expected to come towards the end of this year (in the familiar LWB format) to take on the likes of the G30 BMW 5 Series and C8 Audi A6.
Despite being a facelift, the sedan gets a complete revamp to its exterior styling while keeping the proportions identical to its predecessor. The car features the latest development of Gorden Wagener’s Sensual Purity design philosophy and has become in line with the other fresh products from the three-pointed star. The new E-Class feels much more rounded and the lines are fluidic than ever before.
The full-LED headlamps follow a distorted trapezoidal approach while the tail lamps get pointy, but not sharp. We prefer the previous shape. We are also in the opinion that it could be the ‘last best-looking’ E-Class since the older W212 and W211 generations were also strong in the aesthetics department.
On the inside, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class features all the latest tech including the brand’s updated MBUX infotainment system. The state-of-the-art system (arguably the best in the business) incorporates a touchscreen and instrument console spanning 10.25 inches (12.3-inch screens come optional), diagonally.
For the global market, the 2020MY E-Class boasts of a wide array of engine and powertrain choices, including plug-in hybrids. The PHEVs come in both petrol (156-367bhp) and diesel (160-330bhp) formats. The usual 2.0-litre i4 and 3.0-litre petrol and diesel mills now feature a 48V mild-hybrid setup. The full specifications chart is yet to be revealed.
On the other hand, the higher AMG E53 4MATIC+ employs a 435bhp/520Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo i6 petrol motor. Its EQ Boost starter-alternator system can provide an extra 22bhp and 250Nm of torque for a brief period. The engine sends power to all four wheels via a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT torque-converter automatic transmission. We know you are more interested in seeing the refreshed AMG E63 S which will come “soon enough”.
