Nissan Leaf with green number plate spied – Launch soon

The Nissan Leaf EV has been on sale in global markets since 2010. Its second generation model came in 2017 and it is currently regaled as the bestselling electric vehicle in the world.

Nissan has been actively testing the Leaf EV on Indian soil. It had been spied testing in Delhi NCR some months ago and more recently was spied in Thiruvanathapuram (Images – Ananthakrishnan P). Slated for launch in the country later this year, the new Nissan Leaf here is registered at Kerala RTO, and surprisingly carries a BS4 compliant rating.

Nissan Leaf is on sale in over 50 global markets. It is now ready to enter 6 new markets in Latin America by end of this month; and across 7 markets in Asia and Oceania by December 2019.

The Nissan Leaf in India will be brought in as a CBU imported from Japan for a start, with the company planning to start local assembly at a later stage. This will enable better pricing.

In view of the Nissan Leaf coming in as a CBU and with the company promising competitive pricing, it has resorted to certain cost cutting factors. It will sport steel wheels, will be devoid of ORVM mounted turn indicators and neither will it sport LED DRLS and fog lamps.

These cost cutting factors will not be seen in the interiors and the Nissan Leaf will receive features such as automatic climate controls, ventilated seats, digital instrument cluster and a 7” touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In compliance with new safety regulations, the new Nissan Leaf EV will come in with Anti Lock Braking System, EBD, 6 airbags, emergency braking and traffic signal recognition. It will also get intelligent lane driving and e-Pedal mode for one pedal driving.

Nissan Leaf EV will come in with an EM57 electric motor. This 40 kWh Li-ion battery pack offers 148 PS power at 3,283 – 9,795 rpm and 320 Nm torque at 0-3,283 rpm with a 240 km range in the JC08 test cycle.

The battery pack takes 16 hours for charge via a 3 kW charger and 8 hours via a 6 kW charger. The quick charger allows the battery to charge to 80 percent in 40 minutes. Pricing of the Nissan Leaf EV is expected to be below the Rs.30 lakh mark.
