After partnership with Bajaj and Renault for manufacturing an ultra low cost car, Nissan, is all set to make an agreement with Ashok Leyland for developing a small car for the global market to be priced around $4500-$5000 (about Rs 2.25 lakhs-2.50 lakhs).

Collin Dodge, Nissan, said that the small car is intended to attract customers from the price brackets of $4500-5000. He also said that this price bracket will account to 20% of total global car sales in coming times.

Nissan and Renault already had announced a tie up with Bajaj Auto in 2008 to produce a car in the budget of $2500, but Dodge said that they are yet to find solution to multiple engineering questions that occur in manufacturing such a car.

While talking about reducing prices through localization, he said that none of the major giants can manufacture cars in this budget without partnering with local firms who are already concentrating on this bracket. He also said that the main markets that they are targeting for this $5000 car is mainly China, followed by India.

The car in India can be expected to be positioned between Tata Nano and Maruti Swift.

Nissan already partners with Ashok Leyland to manufacture light commercial vehicles. The joint venture has developed both trucks and buses in the 3-tonne and 6-tonne category.
